Stop Wage Theft!

To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:

 

WHEREAS Workers in Ontario have experienced over $200 million in wage theft over the past decade;

WHEREAS the government has failed to enforce penalties for wage theft under the Employment Standards Act in the majority of cases where theft has occurred;

WHEREAS the government relies on employees with the least power to report wage theft, often leading to their unfair termination;

Therefore, we, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to direct the Government of Ontario to immediately;

  • Identify all employers’ who break the law and steal workers’ wages through proactive and expanded inspections
  • Revise employee classification standards to stop the misclassification and underpayment of employees as independent contractors
  • Provide workers the right to card-check union certification so they can quickly gain protection from employer abuse and wrongful termination when recovering stolen wages
