Save Small Businesses

To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:

WHEREAS small businesses are the heart of Ontario’s main streets and local economies, bringing vibrancy and employment to our communities;

WHEREAS small business owners invest significant money, labour, and care into renovating their business spaces, which also creates local jobs across Ontario;

WHEREAS many commercial tenants lack security of tenure, even if they consistently pay their rent on time;

WHEREAS commercial tenants can face sudden eviction, rapidly changing additional charges, insufficient documentation for costs, and little protection when they ask reasonable questions about their lease obligations;

WHEREAS protecting small businesses from unfair evictions will protect local jobs and communities across Ontario;

WHEREAS protecting small businesses also means protecting Ontario jobs and neighbourhoods;

Will you sign?

Therefore, we, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to:

  1. Begin public consultations to modernize the Commercial Tenancies Act;

  2. Explore ways to better protect small businesses from unfair or retaliatory commercial evictions;

  3. Require greater transparency and documentation for additional rent, maintenance fees, and other commercial lease charges;

  4. Explore standardized commercial lease agreements that clearly set out the rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants, and that prioritize existing tenants when lease terms are up;

  5. Study policies, such as commercial rent guidelines, to stabilize commercial rent and make it predictable for small businesses from year to year;

  6. Create a mechanism to enforce rules and resolve disputes;
  7. Develop stronger provincial protections for small businesses that invest in Ontario.
