Whereas, hate crimes are increasing across Ontario and words are not enough. No one should be scared to go for a walk while wearing a hijab or yarmulke. No one should fear worshipping at a synagogue, temple, church, or masjid.
Whereas hate crimes are killing Ontarians. On June 6, 2021, three generations of the Afzal family were killed in an Islamophobic terror attack in London. Madiha Salman, her husband Salman Afzaal, their daughter Yumna Afzaal, and Salman's mother, Talat Afzaal were killed. The youngest member of the family, nine-year old Fayez Afzaal, was the sole survivor of the attack. Ontario should be a province in which Fayez Afzaal and generations of Muslim families can live without fear — regardless of the religion they practice, their clothes, or the colour of their skin.
Whereas Anti-Muslim and Antisemitic hate crimes have sharply increased in Ontario over the last decade. Many Ontarians are afraid to report hate crimes. Many more Ontarians do not report hate crimes because they feel that no action will be taken. Ontarians deserve more accessible ways to report hate crimes, and to be taken seriously when they report hate crimes.
