Community Safety Now

To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:

 

WHEREAS people living and working in Ontario corrections face high rates of violence, routine lockdowns, and unsafe conditions;

WHEREAS the Ontario’s corrections system is not able to support inmates with serious and life-threatening mental health conditions;

WHEREAS the Correctional Services Transformation Act has already been passed into law and would create real accountability and oversight to keep inmates and workers safe.

Therefore, we, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to direct the Government of Ontario to immediately;

  • Enact the Correctional Services Transformation Act to create real oversight and accountability for those living and working in Ontario’s correctional system
  • Strengthen protections for whistleblowers and the Inspector General’s ability to hold management and the Solicitor General accountability
  • Create an online dashboard to track overcapacity and overcrowding in prisons
