Overnight track maintenance for safety
Date: October 22, 2015 - Night work
Work description and purpose
In a previous notice dated September 2, 2015 we advised that corrective track maintenance to rehabilitate the track sub-surface in the open section of Line 1 between Rosedale and Summerhill stations was scheduled for a three week period. Our track crew requires an additional night to complete the removal of some deteriorated ballast (stones) on a section of southbound track near Rosedale Station. This work is scheduled for one night shift on Thursday, October 22.
The work to remove old ballast and soil will take place at track level with a high-pressure vacuum system mounted on a truck operating from the Crescent Bridge. This work will generate some noise when equipment is in full operation.
The vacuum method used to remove the ballast from the track area is quick and less likely to cause damage to existing underground cabling and possible disruptions to subway service.
As the removal of the old ballast progresses, new ballast will be delivered by a subway work-car. After all the new ballast has been spread evenly, the track area will be tamped to secure the ballast and track system into place. The portable tamping units will create some noise when in full operation.
This type of work can only be carried out overnight when the subway is not in service (approx. 2 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 22). Thank you for your patience as we work to improve transit in Toronto.
