Overnight track maintenance for safety
Scheduled Start Date: September 14, 2015
Work Description and Purpose
Beginning on September 14 and continuing for approximately three weeks, weather permitting, the TTC will carry out corrective track maintenance in the open section of Line 1 between Rosedale and Summerhill stations; specifically between Rowanwood Avenue and Crescent Road. This work is necessary to rehabilitate the track sub-surface to ensure safe, smooth operations along this section for the long-term.
A crew will remove old ballast (stones), rehabilitate the sub-surface and place new ballast across sections of the southbound track bed. Majority of the work will take place at track level however a high-pressure vacuum system mounted on a truck will operate from the Rowanwood, Roxborough and Crescent bridges (at different times) to remove areas of old ballast and soil. This work will generate some noise when the equipment is in full operation.
The vacuum method used to remove the ballast from the track area is quick and less likely to cause damage to existing underground cabling and possible disruptions to subway service.
As the removal of the old ballast progresses, new ballast will be delivered by a subway work-car. After all the new ballast has been spread evenly, the track area will be tamped to secure the ballast and track system into place. The portable tamping units will create some noise when in full operation.
This type of work can only be carried out overnight when the subway is not in service (approx. 2:00 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. Monday - Saturday and 8:30 a.m. on Sunday).
Thank you for your patience as we work to improve transit in Toronto.
