Lulu Wei is a Toronto-based director and cinematographer, who holds an MFA in Documentary Media from Ryerson University. Lulu’s work explores themes of space-making, cultural identity and queerness. Lulu’s debut feature documentary about the redevelopment of Honest Ed’s, There’s No Place Like This Place, Anyplace, premiered at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in 2020 and won a Rogers Audience Award. A TV broadcast version of the documentary was commissioned by the CBC and received two nominations for Best Directing and Writing for the 2021 Canadian Screen Awards. Lulu’s films and installations have been screened and exhibited at various festivals such as DOK.fest München, Calgary International Film Festival, DOXA, Images Festival and Inside Out Film Festival. When it’s not a pandemic, you’ll usually find Lulu DJing at a dance party or throwing an event with New Ho Queen, the queer Asian arts collective they cofounded.
