The City of Toronto does not have an official designation for cultural spaces. This means that the City has no way to protect important cultural spaces and businesses within our communities, leaving them vulnerable to gentrification, development whims of the provincial government, or being priced-out of the market. How do we move forward?
Throughout the It Takes a Village campaign, we are looking for ways to define cultural spaces, understand how they differ from heritage, and learn what an official “cultural district” designation should include so we can guarantee the protection of these communities for generations to come.

The recommendations below are derived from the incredible conversation we had during our It Takes a Village panel, offering many ways for us to start thinking and building our definition and practice around how to designate and protect cultural spaces.
