650 Parliament Inc. management has posted an update on the Wellesley Parliament Square website.
The update is to notify tenants that the building owners are seeking permission from the courts to remove tenant belongings from apartments to facilitate quicker reconstruction of 650 Parliament Street. This request will likely be heard in the courts by mid-June.
When our office asked for a scheduled update on May 15, the draft statement provided by the 650 Parliament Inc. management spokesperson was confusing and unclear. We asked them to:
- Communicate directly with 650 Parliament tenants on their website;
- Clarify what the ownership intends to propose to the courts;
- Have the ownership confirm that it is providing relevant materials on this matter will be provided to class action counsel that is acting on behalf of 650 Parliament tenants in the class proceedings; and
- Hold a tenant meeting with 650 Parliament tenants to help communicate what the ownership is requesting and to answer questions.
We are pleased that management is taking action on items #1 to #3 following our request, and look forward to a positive response on #4. We have also offered to assist them with holding a tenant meeting. Should 650 Parliament tenants themselves wish to hold a tenant meeting with management on this complicated matter, Councillor Wong-Tam would be supportive.
If tenants wish to contact class counsel on this matter, they should contact the law firms of Strosberg Sasso Sutts LLP and Charney Lawyers. Please visit their website for information about the class action lawsuit as well as contact information. These are lawyers working on behalf of 650 Parliament tenants, and they will be your best source of information.
The property owner's update notifies the remaining tenants in short-term rental, hotel, or other arrangements that property management is attempting to secure local apartment accommodations for them. We have requested your landlord to provide as much notification as possible, and supports for individuals who may require additional time and assistance.
