260 Wellesley Street East Update #2

Updated January 24, 2019 at 2:00pm

Last night approximately 250 residents from 260 Wellesley Street East joined me, Mayor Tory, Toronto Fire Services, the Office of Emergency Management and a spokesperson for Wellesley Parliament Square to update residents who have been without power or water for almost 48 hours.

My office received a status update from the Office of Emergency Management at 12:30 pm today. We will be able to confirm mid-day tomorrow (Friday, January 25) if the heat, power and water can be restored. The Electrical Safety Authority, the Province's regulator, remains on site and is overseeing all work taking place. For the time being, the building remains safe and open to residents.

Over 50 security guards have been hired to assist tenants to and from their units; efforts have been made to provide temporary lighting on stairwells, to heat the hallways and to provide non-potable water to allow residents to wash and flush their toilets. The Wellesley Community Centre remains open with Red Cross staff on hand to provide snacks and a place for residents to warm up and sleep as is required. Hourly wellness checks continue to take place in the building and blankets are being distributed by Toronto Fire to tenants who require them.

At yesterday's meeting, my staff collected information from tenants about their situation. For those tenants who special circumstances, we will be passing their information onto the Office of Emergency Management and the building owner. We want them to be able to coordinate with the Red Cross should an evacuation be required.

Tenants looking for more information and assistance with immediate needs and accommodations can go to the tenant information centre that the owners have re-established at 240 Wellesley Street East. For their own convenience, and to reduce personal hardship, it is recommended that residents who can find temporary accommodation with nearby friends and family do so.
